Zilliken 1992 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spatlese
It might make an MBAs head spin around to hold on to inventory for nearly 20 years before releasing it-and then releasing your product at the exact same price as your brand new releases. But we find a few examples of just such practice in German winemaking from time to time. I sampled Zilliken's 1992 Spätlese at a recent trade tasting and again when owner Hanno Zilliken appeared at The Wine Country for a multi-winery event recently. What I discovered was extraordinary. The appearance is as clear and fresh-looking as if it were just made. There obviously are developmental notes of aged Riesling in the aroma and flavor, yet the wine possesses a character of brightness that is absolutely surprising. We acquired just twenty-four bottles and several have already gone out the door. |

Dr. Crusius 2007 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spatlese
Nahe has many world-class Riesling producers, yet the region’s vineyard names are notoriously long and hard to pronounce, especially after eating a peanut butter sandwich.
I wasn’t looking for another Riesling when this wine, from a winery going back to the 1950s, crossed my table. It was so sweet and generous I couldn’t resist acquiring it for The Wine Country. The Dr. Crusius Spätlese drinks more like a Gold Kapsul Auslese (GKA), with the classic notes of peaches, apricots and honey found in the finest noble late harvest wines. It is not cheap—nor should it be—but it is priced about half what comparable wines from better known estates would fetch. For that reason, it is one of the great values in our store.

Pascal Janvier 2009 Jasnieres
The 2008 vintage of this wine took off faster than we could have possibly imagined, seemed like every time we turned around the wine was gone and one day, well it was gone for good. I was thrilled when my Kermit Lynch sales rep pulled the new vintage from her bag to taste me on. Not as funky as the 2008, the fruit seems more upfront and focused but all that amazing complexity is still there; that sexy mix of bright, ripe peaches, spice and minerals. On the palate the wine is broad and mouth filling but with the perfect amount of acidity. Remarkable.

Olek Bondonio 2008 Piemonte Grignolino Piedmont
You don’t often see Grignolino, a grape native to Piedmont, here in the U.S., and with just 800 bottles made of this, there won’t be much of this around. It’s a grape that used to be made into a sparkling or sweeter style, but Bondonio makes this dry; and it’s a perfect wine for appetizers. His Grigolino is very easy to drink, with soft fruit and a bit structure on the back end. Seriously, there are few other wines that start a meal off like this does |
